Like the novel protagonist, I was also raised on the West Coast, but lived out of sync on the East Coast 9 years up through my graduation with a BS EE engineering degree at George Washington University, Washington, DC. in 1974. My own Misty graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in Political Science with an MBA. We’ve since lived in the San Francisco Bay Area over 45 years, renting two 5-bedroom homes out to UC Berkeley students. I was an electrical engineer for 24 years, with my Misty using her MBA up to the level of VP.
My novel-related experience in nature comes from over 60 years of backpacking, canoeing, fishing, and hitchin’ throughout the West and Northeast. I have whitewater rafted over 20 rivers including 5 trips down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon (4 as boat captain; 1 as trip leader) and several on the Green River through the Gates of Ladore. I’ve summited Kilimanjaro and experienced the Serengeti. Consequently, many of the adventures in the novel actually happened – with all locations real and accurately described – merely rewritten into a two novel story.
All prose and song lyrics in both novels were written by me (except Eddystone Light~ 1866 by Arthur Lloyd, from previous versions much older) and recorded into 13 original songs, with me singing and playing all instruments – guitar, mandolin, bass, piano/keyboard, ukulele, etc.
All photo-illustrations in the illustrated versions of both novels were taken on my own adventures.
I have adapted a 482 page screenplay of both novels for a great 10 part TV miniseries or two great movies, complete with the 13 original songs as a music soundtrack. – Peter Edler
